How We Rank Hair Salons

Our transparent, data-driven methodology for ranking NYC's best hair salons and barbershops

Our Ranking Philosophy

At NYC Haircuts, we believe rankings should be merit-based, transparent, and useful. Salons cannot buy their way to the top. Our rankings reflect genuine quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction based on objective criteria.

We update rankings daily as new reviews come in, ensuring our list reflects current performance—not past reputation.

Ranking Factors

Each salon is evaluated using a weighted scoring system based on six key factors:

Overall Rating (30%)

The average star rating from verified customer reviews across multiple platforms. Salons must maintain a minimum 4.0 rating to be considered for our rankings.

Why it matters: Overall rating is the strongest indicator of consistent quality and customer satisfaction.

Review Volume (25%)

Total number of verified reviews. More reviews provide stronger validation of quality and reduce the impact of outlier experiences. We favor salons with 50+ reviews.

Why it matters: A 5.0 rating from 5 reviews is less reliable than a 4.8 rating from 200 reviews.

Recent Performance (20%)

We heavily weight reviews from the past 6 months. A salon's current performance matters more than its historical rating. This ensures our rankings reflect present-day quality.

Why it matters: Salons change—stylists leave, ownership transfers, and standards shift. Recent reviews tell the real story.

Service Quality (15%)

Analysis of review content for mentions of: skill/technique, atmosphere, cleanliness, customer service, and consistency. We use natural language processing to identify quality patterns.

Why it matters: Star ratings don't tell the full story. Reading reviews reveals what makes a salon truly exceptional.

Value Rating (5%)

Relationship between price and quality. We evaluate whether salons deliver exceptional value at their price point—from budget barbershops to luxury salons.

Why it matters: The best salon isn't always the most expensive. We reward salons that provide outstanding service at fair prices.

Operational Status (5%)

Salons must be currently operational with verified business information, accurate hours, and active contact details. Permanently closed businesses are removed from rankings.

Why it matters: Nothing frustrates users more than outdated listings for closed businesses.

What Doesn't Affect Rankings

  • Advertising or Payment: Salons cannot pay for higher rankings or featured placement.
  • Partnerships: We don't have business partnerships with salons that affect rankings.
  • Personal Preferences: Our team's individual salon preferences don't influence rankings.
  • Salon Size or Chain Status: Independent salons and chains are evaluated equally.

Editor's Choice Selection

Our #1 ranked "Editor's Choice" salon represents the best overall combination of quality, consistency, value, and customer satisfaction in NYC. This salon has earned the top spot through exceptional performance across all ranking factors.

Editor's Choice is re-evaluated weekly and can change as performance data updates. We're committed to recognizing excellence wherever it appears.

We aggregate and analyze data from multiple trusted sources:

Updates & Maintenance

Daily: Review counts and ratings are updated every 24 hours with fresh data.

Weekly: Rankings are recalculated to reflect the latest performance trends.

Monthly: We audit our methodology and adjust weighting factors if needed to improve accuracy.

As Needed: Salons that close permanently or fail to maintain quality standards are removed from rankings.
